Subject: film was edited for TV
This print of Bells of Rosarita was a television print that was available for years. Only in the last ten years was the complete film available through Republic home video. The print is missing about five minutes showing Roy Rogers phoning his studio to enlist the help of his cowboy star friends. Bob Livingston, Bill Elliott, Don Barry, Allan Lane, and Sunset Carson are all shown going about their duties at the studio when they get called to the phone. Sunset Carson is shown making a film on the western street. Allan Lane is shown in conference. Don Barry (who had been promoted to non-westerns) is shown making a film in modern dress. This segment was perhaps the favorite of western film collectors and its restoration to the finished print was greatly appreciated.

Subject: Republic's First Guest Star Western
This is the first of 3 "guest-star" modern westerns that Republic made, and except for the fact it's in black and white and screams for color, it's pretty good and somewhat tongue in cheek. For the record "Out California Way" starring Monte Hale in 1946 and "Trail Of Robin Hood" starring Roy Rogers in 1950 were the other two. Every cowboy star under contract to Republic at the time is in it except John Wayne. The story is a good one in the let's save the show vein with each cowboy star saying or doing his particular sthick, and of course catching the bad guys in the end. Lots of music, lots of action, and some fine banter and insider humor as well. A very successful Rogers. This a TV print, so be ware that musical numbers have been cut or trimmed depending. Otherwise enjoy.
